[Monday of Holy Week 2018]
"A Road Trip’s GPS"
Yesterday was a celebratory day with shouts of “Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!”, and the waving leafy
branches, as Jesus rides into Jerusalem
with crowds surrounding him. It was Palm Sunday! Today it’s Monday, actually on
the church calendar, it’s “Monday of Holy Week”. The euphoria of yesterday is
gone. So, what happens today?
It is the first day of the week, and we are on a journey whose
destination is unknown; and, yes we are part of yesterday’s crowd which has
been dispersed into many directions. Although there is an essence of sorrow, we
are traveling without fear and some excitement of hopefulness. In today’s
language, we may define this adventure as a “road trip”. It’s not a road trip
of smart cars or self-driving cars. It’s a trip peddled by our heart and the power
of belief, a little imaginary footwork, and maybe being carried by a “colt” to
relieve the weariness. We need a map! We need directions! We need a GPS. Not
the “Global Positioning System” but a spiritual GPS guided as “God’s
Presence Sustains”. Today, the Isaiah reading
(42:1-9), invites us to pause and breathe in Ruach (spirit) on this road
trip, and at the rest stops to look and embrace the terrain of God. To look at the
God of justice, the God of creation, the God who opens the eyes of the blind,
and the God who brings out the prisoners. It is this God of action whose
messages were told by Jesus, his servant, through parables and definitions of
the “law”.
On road trips, usually someone in the car or van will ask, “Are
we there yet?” after five minutes of riding. NO, and this trip is not to be
measured. In our rush to get through Holy Week, we often overlook the source of
this week. It is the source of God’s presence with us, and that source sustains
us.
For this Holy Week, use today as a beginning. Allow yourself
to map out the destination which you wish to reach by using the spiritual GPS
as your guidepost. Tomorrow, Tuesday will come with its own rest-stops!
